If you want to be able to watch TV shows and movies, it's definitely worth it. The files are big, and you're better off with 80GB than the smaller one. Not to mention, it holds an astronomical amount of music. I have a few thousand songs, 4 or 5 movies, and about 15 shows on mine right now and I'm not even using half of the space. I've had a regular iPod, a nano, and the video, and the video is great. I love it.

I would say a video Ipod is totally worth it. I have the 40 gig version and I love it.

As for the choice of either 40 or 80. That depends on how much you are going to use it for video. If you plan on watching TV shows on it often or even movies, then go with the 80. I use mine more for pictures and short videos and 40 is plenty of space for that.
