The decline of theater (from tragedy to farce and finally to masques and other kinds of mixed presentations) began during the Hellenistic period (after the Macedonians became the rulers of Greece).

Some scholars and critics have attributed the turn away from tragedy as an outcome of a less democratic state: tragedy relies on truth, and speaking the truth is more dangerous when government is despotic.

So, the decline seems to have occurred well in advance of the development of the Christian movement.
