I am a teenager working at a local grocery store. I work 20-30 hours per week, and i am getting paid 4.75 an hour. I know the National minimum wage is 5.15, but under certain requirements, an employer can pay less than that. Does anyone know the requirements? or can at least tell me if it's legal to get paid 4.75

It depends. By teenager, do you mean 19? Or do you mean 16? Age can make a difference. In the US, the lowest minimum wage that can be paid is $5.15 an hour. UNLESS... You are 16 or under. In some states in the US, LEGALLY they can pay you 4.75. I'm 90% sure that it's 16 and under (it may be 18...).

I say this because at my job they have one of those big "Wage Laws" posters, and when work gets slow, I read those things. I'm fairly sure it's 16.

Even so, I guarentee you you can get a job that pays higher. Most grocery stores will pay higher than that. I'd say look for a new job.

Good luck!

In Canada teenagers UNDER the age of 18 are paid a lower minimum wage that those age 18 and over, and it is legal.

so this same rule might be in effect in your state as well.

ETA the poster says its legit so you cant complain. You can choose to find another job. I'm adding a link to show wage rates for all states.

Dude that is a illegal seriously, anything under the fed minimum wage is illegal, so talk to your manager and ask for a raise, if he says no, then tell him the minimum requirement and if you get fired then seek some legal help. but keep in mind if you are making tips like valet parking jobs then your employer might say wages offset and he has no obligation to pay the 5.15. good luck and stay in school....
