It would help if you listed the year, make and model of vehicle. But in answer to your question, YES something has obviously failed inside the transmission (or transaxle).

Yes you either need a new or rebuilt transmission. My 93 Ford Ranger had the same problem, and eventually even reverse quit working. It cost $2500 for a rebuilt transmission in my truck.

1st gear and reverse are on the same shaft and will work but drive 2&3 are on another shaft the gears may be the problem but I believe it may be the clutch pack or loose bands. aThe band can be retouqued but it's only temperary. A clogged valve body would effect all gears and poor shifting. You should take it to a reputable shop and have it evaluated. Luck to ya, Michael (30+ yr Machinist,Manager Auto Zone)

Clearly if you are having problems with the gears, its the transmission. You should have it checked out as the engine could suffer damage at the higher RPMs demanded by the lower gears. Good luck

yes, you need to have your transmission rebuilt, your reverse gear is gone. call a couple of transmission shops, that way you can compare prices.

Before you go & get a rebuilt trans. check the caple & linkage. If the detents in the shifter don't match the trans. you could experience that scenario.
