Last week, i was exercising and turned my ankle. It didn't bother me right away. It started hurting me 2 days later while walking my dog. It hurt so badly i could barely get home. It was swollen and i could barely do anything. IT's been bothering me all week, is still swollen, and hasn't gotten any better. I have sharp sudden pains, then it throbs, especially when i move it a certain way. Ive been wrapping it and icing it all week, and trying to stay off it. it's been bad though, and not getting better. I also have to carry 30 lbs of books every day during school, so that makes it worse. What more should i do? How long should a sprain take to heal?? Any other advice on what i should do? Thanks.

I have sprained both ankles x2 and the pain last me 2 - 3 weeks. Try to keep it elavated, ice it alternate with heat, but if you wrap it do so loosely or use a air ankle splint to keep it from twisting as you walk. You may be able to find a slightly used air splint at a resale store (GoodWill or St. Vinneys) I work as a CNA in a nursing home after my injuries, and yes it was very painful to walk or move in any direction. Try Ibuprophen to help with the swelling every 4-6 hours too. Break a leg!

If excessive demands are made on a joint, the ligaments that hold the neighboring bones together and keep the joint in position may be stretched or torn. The injured area varies depending on the extent of damage to the soft tissue and cartilage that support the joint. A sprained ligament often stilll functions, but is painful to use. In a sprain so severe that all supporting ligaments are torn, the joint may be misshapen as well as swollen. There is no danger in a minor sprain. Any joint will weaken if its ligaments are repeatedly stretched or torn especially the ankle. . If it last for more than three days see your physician they will take an xray to distinguish from a fracture. If its minor support the joint with an elastic bandage and rest with ice to reduce the swelling for the first 24 48 hours. then start to exercise the joint as much as possible, without forcing it to bear weight. Also keep your ankle elevated to help keep fluid away that causes swelling. Good
Luck

Sprains and strains are similar: Sprains are tears to ligaments and strains are caused by tears in tendons. It sounds like you may have one of these two. Since Ligaments and tendons don't have much blood flow, they take a longer time to heal. You're doing good though. Keep off of it as much as possible and elevate the ankle when you're sitting or resting. Alternate using ice and heat. Ice will reduce swelling and heat will alleviate pain. Keep using a compression bandage, that reduces the swelling too. Take NSAID's like Ibuprofen, Aspirin or Aleve to help relieve the pain. I suggest getting a friend or classmate to help carry your books. You'll be out of commission for a while but see a doctor if it gets worse. Good luck!

You have done something to your tendons. Go and see your doctor, you will need therapy on it to heal it.
