I see there are some "anti-friction liquids" available in computer stores, but they're ridiculously expensive. So I'm wondering if there's something else I can use to make my mouse glide more smoothly.

Its one of those laser mouse and lately the teflon "feet" have been grinding on the desk a little.. I tried cleaning them but its still not as smooth as it was before.

Have you thought about looking for replacement mouse feet? I have seen them on the internet. However, I would still suggest comparing the price of the feet to that of a new mouse.

Another idea might be to stop at your local craft store and see if they have anything that could be used as replacement feet.

Rather than trying to lube your mouse, try to clean it well. The ball is usually help in place by a ring (put pressure and turn in direction usually indicated with an arrow). Let the ball fall out and put t o the side. Inside you will see rollers that the ball moves against, and you will probably be surprised at the gunk on them. Using cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol or window cleaner, and work the dirt off the rollers and interior. Then wash the ball with dish-washing liquid and warm water. Dry it well and reassemble. That will usually fix any issue you may have with sticking or skipping.
Good luck I hope this helps.

If it is a ball mouse, take the bottom off and look at the rollers that come in contact with the ball. If your mouse isn't rolling smoothly, most likely it is lint and buildup on these contact rollers. I just use my fingernail to scrape them away and works perfectly. If it is a laser mouse...get a mousepad that has a rouger surface....the smoother the surface is, the less action you will get from the mouse.

KY Jelly...LOL...jk...I'm sure if you took a paper towel and sprayed somthing like Pledge on it and wiped it on the ball and the inside of the mouse it could possibly work...
