An end to military rule would be nice, but probably not likely in the new future. The IIS should be completely overhauled to eliminate corruption and extremist influence. Border disputes with Afghanistan should be revisited and settled in the interest of strengthening ties between the two countries. Civil rights should be increased for Pakistanis, particularly rights regarding political expression and organization. Personally, I would also support Pakistan signing the NPT and pledging to dismantle its nuclear weapons program as a gesture to India. I think it would be a good move for renewing talks with India and would also set a good example regionally (ie to Iran...).

Firstly this is towatds certain individuals....Abenezer, i really don't know how you got the spot of top contributer when you 'come' out with answers like that. Maybe you should actually go to Pakistan and stop relying on western media reports. 'Make them a little less extreme'....you really should actually go to Pakistan. What is extreme on a whole about pakistan and pakistani's, their belief in 'faith, unity and freedom' M.Jinnah....... You are obviously referring to a certain few which exist in every coutry and not the whole country as a whole.

Secondly 'Dick', your answer is pathetic! Do you actually even know anything about Islam? OBVIOUSLY NOT!

The answer to the origional q. Pakistan is making rapid progress into becoming a developed country. Its reformed policys are attracting huge FDI and peole are beginning to lead a better quality lives, poverty is decreasing and literacy rates incraesing. However resourecs are not being utilised to full capacity because of CORRUPTION. Corruption is almost part of everyday life in Pakistan. Everywhere you turn corruption is abundant, whether that be the police force, MP's and even the president himself who only paid approx 500 rupees (£5) tax a few years back on all his property etc and he's a millionaire for goodness sake! Mortgages are not as available as they are in the UK yet mansions are being built across Islamabad, Lahore, Karchi, Gujrat and the list could go on, where is this money coming from? Airport officials (including security guards!).
Example 1. My uncle was in Islamabad, Pakistan a few weeks back, he ws stopped by the police who demanded his license. It was a British license which can be used in Pakistan. The policeman exclaimed that it was a 'fake'! My uncle turned around and asked the policeman to read what it said on the license and the policeman could not do so. My uncle in turn said that if it was bribrery money he was not going to get it. The policeman said that if he didnt give the money he would impound the car which he did.

Eg 2. On the way back home, my uncle had bought a few CD's (not pirate copys as they were from a reputable chain of stores, however the security guard at the airport assumed that he may heve a few pirate copy CD's. The guard said that he will turn a blind eye and not search the suitcase if he gave him some money but away from the cameras. My uncle told the guard to feel free and search his cases, he had nothing to hide.

Yet my uncle will still go back to Pakistan because he knows that Pakistan is a beautiful country with a lot to offer.

We must respect Pakistan as an independent country, support democratic reform and work with the people of the country. Aid can be offered but the money must be used to help the people through real projects and efforts that work and not to benefit government officials and the rich military leaders and businesspeople who support them. This has been a serious problem in Nigeria.

If certain problems are being created by Western policy and/or interference in the region, then perhaps we should be more informed of this by the media and work to change the policy. Certainly, the effects of the wars in Afghanistan, Somalia and Iraq cannot be ignored and Pakistan has been very cooperative, but what have they received in return?

I think in the West, we can give money to U.N.-based organizations such as UNESCO, the IMF and WHO in order to improve conditions. We can also support grassroots reform in communities and democratic opposition movements. We can accept immigrants and refugees and help them build a better life for themselves. We can support women's rights and human rights reform in Pakistan without any anti-Islamic sentiment since oftentimes problems in Middle Eastern countries are blamed on Islam and not on the conditions and governments of the country. There can be tribal infighting, poverty, illiteracy, government corruption, foreign interference and historical problems at the root of human rights violations but people are quick to discriminate and judge instead of helping.

on the 2d, the Pakistani economic device is in shambles, as hence of homegrown terrorism and a susceptible, if no longer non-existent commercial infrastructure. yet between the sectors the place Pakistan does extra effectual than different countries is in the sphere of Islamic banking. Pakistan has classic commercial banks and Islamic banks, which furnish products and centers that are a fusion of modern-day-day banking and particular tenets of Islam. Pakistan additionally has a great handicrafts industry, which isn't regulated. regrettably, the only ingredient that Pakistan is frequently going on for now's its export of terrorism. And confident, i will believe the answerer before me....it is the international chief.
