is it possible that a dvd from netflix has some kind code on it making it unabe to be played on a computer. I went and got Avant dvd player (not going to pay for anything when I wont really use it) and it says that a file on the dvd cant be opened. Maybe a different dvd. Anyways gonna try it on the dvd player see if it is even playable.

Double-check your connections inside the computer. Make sure that the IDE cable is seated properly and that there are no bent pins. Also, try using a different power connector. The one plugged into the drive may not be making a good connection.

If you have two devices on the IDE cable, make sure both are set to cable select or one to master and the other to slave. Better yet, disconnect the other drive and try it with just the DVD burner connected to the cable.

Knowing my previous experiences with WMP, it might be the Windows Media software itself. I am thinking that you don't have a plug-in installed which tells WMP how to properly decode the DVD's you are trying to play.

I did a search and it looks like you do need an extre plug-in so that WMP will play DVD's:

If that doesn't work, try re-installing Windows Media Player

Following that, if success is still illusive, try Googling a third party DVD player software package you can try.

If all else fails, take it back and get a Mac.
