I would have to give the nod to the first KOTOR. KOTOR2 is better in most respects except that LucasArts forced Obsidian to ship the game before they were finished which is why the ending is so choppy and difficult to follow. Also the first KOTOR has the most awesome of awesome plot twists with Revan. Two words: Power Trip.

I prefer the second one because of the minor tweaks to the layout, the prestige classes, and the debate between the characters about what the Force is, what a Jedi is, and what a Jedi's responsibility is to themselves and others. I found their moral and philosophical debates fascinating, much more so than the first one. I think the first KOTOR was much more black and white, which I didn't find as interesting. I also really liked how the character of Reven is such a driving force in the second, without Reven even appearing in the game! Cool stuff.

The first one has a better story and I think it is much more interesting. The second one has a few technical/graphical/gameplay improvements, but the story falls apart and the ending is disappointing. The developers should have been allowed to finish it properly.

So I would have to say the first one is better, but they are both really cool games. I hope they make another one...
