I personally think Bellevue Square is the best mall/shopping area around Seattle. It is about 15 minutes out of Seattle. (I know this for a fact) and it has great new shopping areas. Another great area to go is Fremont(an area) in Seattle. They have many little boutiques that have good finds although a little pricey. Downtown Seattle also has good shopping but I would definitely recommend Bellevue Square just over the bridge from Seattle. Also the U-District has some good shopping. Hope this helps! The person who said bellevue is an hour and a half from Seattle has no idea what they are talking about!

I actually prefer the South Hill Mall in Puyallup, as it is newer and larger than most other Seattle area malls while being less crowded at the same time. It is located off the 512 Freeway and Meridian Avenue. If driving from Portland, just take exit #127 off of I-5 (Freeway 512) and travel east about 5 miles and exit Meridian. Incidentally, all of the usual major restaurants are located there as well.

Okay, when your going to Seattle from Portland you take I-5, right?
When you get near the seattle tacoma airport, (or just past the exit) there is a sign for the southcenter mall. Thats a pretty nice mall, a little cheaper then the other ones. You can also turn off onto I-405 from there. If you want to go to the bellevue mall (which is really really nice, pretty high class though) you get onto I-405 and drive until exit 8 or something.
The other nice mall is north gate, but thats farther north than seattle.

Why limit yourself to a mall? Malls are everywhere and are pretty much the same.
Go shopping at Pike's Place Market. Hit Ye Olde Curoisity Shoppe along the water front. Downtown Seattle offers tons of shopping-coture, vintage, chain stores and botiques.
There are also some malls in Downtown-Westlake Center, Pacific Place, and Rainer Square.

It's a bit north of Seattle, but I love the Seattle Premium Outlets! Absolutely fantastic shopping and really a beautiful place. Check out their website for a listing of stores, there are too many to list here.
Have fun!
