Hi,
You have to play 20 RATED games to advance to show a rating. So don't play in the social lounges unless you are sure they are rated before you sit and start a game. After that you will fall into higher ranks (colors) at 50 point breaks. So, play well so you will start out at a pretty good rating. I really think it is so you have it down pat to start playing with higher rated players? This link has all the rating systems for various Yahoo! Games.

You haven't completed 20 rated games. You are provisional because the system doesn't have enough information about you to give you an accurate rating.

you have to put up with getting kicked out of rooms left and right until you build up a rated status it kinda sucks but it ends sooner than you think
