the difference between hip hop and rap is that rap comes from hip hop. hip hop comes in two main components - rap (MCing) and DJing (production and scratching). the other two components being the hip hop dance (like breakdancing) and urban inspired art (like graffiti). although, you'd find that rap music can also be what others may say as another name for hip hop.

As far as I know, and I'm not an expert, hip hop refers to the music type, style or genre, while the rap is actually the rhymes made by the mc.

to me, i think of hip-hop as the more popular of the two (you know, the sucky evil twin?) and rap is more diverse. I think hip-hop is strickly hip-hop, but rap can be alternative (like atmosphere and gorillaz) and even emo (gym class hereos)
