It depends on the codec you are using and the compression settings and bit rate. If you want to listen to your songs clearly, but with high compression, I would suggest encoding them @ 128kbs. This setting can be found in the "options" menu of whatever software you are using to encode your songs. As for the settings, choose CBR(constant bit rate) for lower quality, higher compression. Or VBR for higher quality lower compression. And for formats, use MP3! Although the compression is not the best, the compatibilty is strong. You can play mp3s on any player, but you cannot play AAC, RA, and WMA on all players.
So it is up to you to choose which one of each settings you wish to use. Well good luck encoding your songs and finding what's right for you!

The smallest format is MP3, try to encode them with the Batch Audio Converter 1.5 from the link below, just search for it and download. It's absolutely free. There's no big difference between the original file and the encoded one. I encoded mine to a lower bit rate (64 Kb/s) and it saved me a lot of memory. It really works despite others opinion.

The smallest would probably be wma. But that's only because windows media player can rip music in low bitrates. If you want to save space, I suggest getting either itunes or realplayer to rip mp3s in lower bitrates. If you use wmp, then use wma audio
