Before boring your block have the cylinder walls "sonic" tested. This test result tells the wall thickness of every cylinder. Some Standard Chevrolet 400 blocks are prone to core shift and in that case you may be dangerously close to the water jackets. If you want to bore it many company's make .010 - .020 over sized pistons. Never put domed pistons in a wedge shaped chamber. The flame travel in shrouded by the dome and incomplete fuel burning will result. Spend your money on having your block "decked" square. Each flat top piston should read zero deck measured from the block surface. Your next change would be a set of Chevrolet Vortec part number 12558060 cast iron cylinder heads. They have 1.94 intakes, and 1.150 exhaust valves. The combustion chamber is 64 cc. With your decked block the compression ratio will be close to 11.1. Chevrolet makes several high rise aluminum intakes to fit the Vortec head. A Chevrolet cam pn. 12353923 hydraulic flat tappet has 114 lobe centers, .465 intake lift and .448 exhaust lift. just the ticket for a 400 small block. Have Fun!

Really, it depends. You didn't mention if you had the block decked, what kind of heads, cam, intake, etc. It is kind of hard to determine the horsepower without knowing all of that stuff. If its a street engine with stock heads (open to interpretation), RV cam and 9 to 1 comp., you may be looking at roughly 300 hp with maybe around 400 ft/lb of torque. Will it be fun on the street? Sure! A street strip terror? From the way it seems probably not. But just put in the vehicle and have fun! Thats really what its about.

Honestly? None. First of all, the 400 wasn't much of a horsepower motor, but it had awesome bottom-end torque. Enough to spin the tires off of a 4300 pound '73 Caprice. Second, the cylinder walls on an SB 400 are too thin to bore .030". You're begging for cracks between the cylinders. Also, they're prone to overheating, as they don't have as many water jackets as other smallblocks. These had to be left out to allow for the larger bore. (327's & 350's have a 4" bore, 400's are 4.125). You want to hotrod a smallblock, stick with a 350 & stroke it.

I had a 327 with a 230/480 Bracket cam and 2.02 heads I never drag raced "legally" with it but it would run neck and neck with a LS1 camaro this was in a 69 chevelle wich was 500 lbs lighter. Those make 330 at the rear wheels. I would say with the extra cubes and the extra durations it should be close to a 400 HP engine at the crank. Then figure 15-20 percent drivetrain loss to the wheels if its a auto car.

About 1 hp per ci or a little more So 400-425 hp is . What counts is the torque. The cam is the uilding block to start with for low to mid range torque. Great off the line,unless ua live out west where you would want top end

I have been running 400s with a 350 stroke for years. Machine work is the key. With a scat crank eagle rods and je 12.5 to 1 pistons toped by a set of ported 041x heads a hurricane intake and 850 race demon we are pumping 612hp on 110. This is a flat tappet motor. With the shorter stroke they love rpms. Nothing raps like it. We circle track race it turning about 7800. Have built a few with mysterious heating problems we never solved though.

Most likely the engine will not produce much more HP than it
did to start with... a passenger car version of this engine produced in the low 200HP range and with the bore job and
dome tops depending on compression ratio it is possible that the increase could be as much as 100 hp but not likely..

a chevy 400 small block you looking about 375 -385 being 30 over about 10-15 hp if even that 30 over is nothin to talk about when you bore the engine it realy depends on the heads and intake and cam to produce any real horse power and torque if i was you would up grade the heads and intake
