Incredibly fast, because your eyes need to not be able to discern the difference between the black and the white.

For example when you are watching cars drive by on the freeway or other fast roads you can easily discern them from everything else and follow them with your eyes.

Theoretically the only way that a zebra would look grey is if you had a VERY long line of them running by at light speed proportions so that you can neither single out a single zebra nor can you tell the difference between the black and the white stripes so they appear to blend.

It depends on if you are moving your eyes with it or not. I am certain it's faster than a zebra can actually run.

Do you know what's interesting? The prevailing theory about why zebras have evolved to have stripes is that the stripes of neighboring zebras running together in a herd create an optical illusion that makes it difficult for predators to focus on one zebra. When you cannot focus on an object it makes it hard to follow it / track it / kill it. My point being that if they are being chased by a lion, that is as fast as zebras will go, and they clearly don't look grey to the lion.

With a few assumptions about human perception, I calculate something in the 300-600 miles per hour range for a human standing on the ground 100 feet away, but this is only if you're looking straight ahead, if you're following the zebra with your eyes it could be much faster, maybe 1500 mph+.

A zebra has to run at 92.37 miles per hour to turn gray, assuming the zebra has average stripes of 3.23 inch width pattern. Females may only have to run at 88.26 miles per hour, because of their thin stripe pattern.

Hm? I think faster than it could actually run, because it would have to be so fast as to be blurred.

Really fast so that the stripes would " appear " to blend.
