Aviator has a point - When you travel influences prices A LOT! Like yako46, I've also gotten round trip tickets for $500~$600, but you have to search for those ...

In addition to the site yako46 recommended, try these:
http://gojapan.about.com/od/airtravel/a/cheapflight.htm
http://www.jtbusa.com/enhome/tickettop.asp
http://www.statravel.com/cps/rde/xchg/us_division_web_live/hs.xsl/flights.htm
http://www.expedia.com/daily/flights/default.asp?ccheck=1&&mcecid=ipsplash_jp

Come on over! The exchange rate is good for tourists at the moment, and it's a fascinating country.

A few questions for you first:

(1) When (date) are you leaving?
(2) How long are you away for?
(3) Oneway or Return ticket?
(4) Any stopover along the way or just the cheapest regardless of stops?

Go to IACE Travel website. I am from Japan and always use them to get the best deal. Off season, you can get tickets for $500 round trip.
