One of the scariest movies I've ever seen!

Actually the Exorcist based William Peter Blatty's novel, which was supposedly based on a real case. (Which involved a young man, not a young girl, by the way) starred Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair as the possessed youngster.
It is more frightening than most. Terribly graphic, especially considering that it was a child that this was happening to, and a child actor. This was what most people found so controversial and unsettling. But for a good psychological scare, watch the original The Haunting, starring Julie Harris.
It was from a book called the Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. Excellent.

Haven't seen The Ring yet. Exorcist was scary but not that bad. When it was first shown, the world was much different than now where we see so much more of this stuff and a lot more of the blood and guts type movies. Get some popcorn, turn off the lights, and have a great time.

I saw it when it first came out and must say it was very scary, but you have to remember special effects were different back then so I don't know how this movie would hold up after all the scary movies that have been made since. It's definitely worth seeing.
In my opinion, it's much better than The Ring.

The exorcist is one of the scariest movies of all time, yes, mainly because it was based on true events. It was so scary that Linda Blair.... the one who played the possessed girl, had a hard time dealing after making the movie... it took years of therapy for her to get past it. If you like movies that give you chills, this is a great one!

(She hosted a haunted house on Halloween near my home once a few years back, got to meet her, she's awesome!)

Hey, I like Constantine with Keanu Reeves too, not as scary, but good.

It doesn't even compare to "The Ring." It's not scary at all!

I think back in its day it was scary because it had never been done before. But if you've seen any recent horror movies, you'll fall asleep with the original "Exorcist."

I have seen this movie a gazillion times and have never been bothered by it. It's a great film! Especially if you are a horror movie buff like I am. If not, perhaps it's better to wait and watch it in the daylight. I think it's a better movie than Ringu.

I love horror but this movie scared the heck outta me!! I watched it and didn't sleep for 2 nights!! I still can't watch it, it's just too realistic, especially if you believe in that kind of stuff as I do. No other movie has done that to me.....scary just thinking about it.

I saw it about 2 years after it's release. I had already heard all the hype you described so I was really prepared for the ultimate scare. When all was said and done I was a little disappointed. Sure it was a scary movie but my underwear was still clean when it was over.

It's pretty scary! Good luck but I wouldn't advise you to watch it at night alone if you get scared easily. If Ringu scared you, I wouldn't advice you to watch it alone. I ended up watching it in the afternoon when I watched it and it still scared me!

It's just a movie, but it's pretty scary - more like "Exorcism of Emily Rose" (but a lot more scarier)...just watch it. It's a different kind of movie than "Ringu". "Ringu" is Horror, and "The Exorcist" is Reality-Horror (if there was such a genre).
