Metal Roofing is an ideal material for a gabled end building. It is not easily installed on a hip roof. Steeper roof pitches make installing metal roofing more time consuming, due to safety constraints.
On a gabled end roof, metal roofing will go Much faster. providing that the pitch is not much more than 4/12. A lot faster.
I installed a steel roof on a 30x50 7/12 gabled end today, and had time to drink beer, and eat oysters. It was a bit steep, but there were only three of us, and only one of us was sober enough to run the screw gun.

Metal Roofing is easy man!
All you have to do is install the sections interlocking each one and screwing it down with sealed screw then your done.
make sure you use tin snips not a saw.
shingles are a pain in the @$$ and I do construction for a living, hauling hundred pound shingle stacks up a ladder is no fun neither is nailing ever single shingle in place .
You can also go over shingle roofing with metal roofing and it will save you a lot of work, also it will make a barrier to keep water out if the metal roofing ever started leaking.

This question has several variables which make answering your question difficult.
1. The size of the roof.
Obviously a larger roof will take longer to install than a smaller one.
2. The slope of the roof.
A 12:12 pitch roof will require fall protection, loading the roof requires more effort and care. A 3:12 roof doesn't require fall protection, loading the roof is a breeze and materials stay where you put them.
3. The size of the crew.
A seven man crew will install more than a three man crew assuming the same skill level.
4. What kind of prep work is required?
A metal roof can be installed over shingles, but a shingle roof shouldn't be installed over another shingle roof (will void shingle warranty) so a shingle install will require a tear-off while a metal roof won't.
5. There are various types a metal roof. A standing seam metal roof will be installed much faster than a metal shingle roof.
6. How cut up is the roof?
A simple shed or gable roof is quick while a roof with turrets, several dormers and a couple of chimneys will definitely add some time with all the extra flashing, crickets and drip edge.
7. How experienced is the crew?
An experienced metal crew is going to install a roof quicker than a inexperienced shingle crew?
All of these items will determine the installation speed. Generally speaking a shingle crew will install faster than a metal crew, but as you can see, there a quite a few variables.

Metal roofing is a whole lot easier to install if the peices are precut.....i roofed houses for four years. It has a lot to do with the roof as it is right now, if u have old metal on there all u have to do is unscrew and throw it off, and replace the new. If there is old shingles..according on the size and pitch of the roof, it might be a pain. The pitch of the roof might give u some concern to when installing metal....hard to get footing on metal. If u are paying someone else to do the roof, metal will be installed a bit quicker depending on the square footage of your roof. If you are doing it and not experienced....be careful. Shingles invovle toting a lot of packs of shingles up ladder, popping lines, laying them right, nailing them down, ridge vents, valleys being laid and then cutting off the ends. But when u do a metal roof is the peices are precut, u lay down the metal and u screw it in...WA LA!! Good Luck

I wasn't going to answer this at first: several did but then? Why are you looking at the time variables? why not look at the values in the looks, the prices, the finished product and the neat job? these are all the products you should be looking at, not the time. It doesn't take that long to do actually. I did leave out one important variable, the price.
Good luck.
