Colonization was a common practice. You have to consider the time period and the standards of society at that time. Many people say their main goal for colonization was to convert heathens and spread Christianity but mainly it was fueled by money and power. Many of these areas had vast unused natural resources which meant money and controlling more land means more power.

I do not think Columbus planned on colonizing the New World he was trying to create a trade route and become rich in trading to Europe.
Columbus was imprisoned after his 4th voyage to the new world so what happened was really out of his hands.
