For most movie theaters, you have to be 17 unless accompanied by an adult.
Outside of theaters, it's up to the parents. Some movies are rated R, but may still be OK for younger kids if parents are fine with something like violence. A lot of parents won't let them watch rated R movies if it's for sexuality or gore, but will if it's for swearing or violence. A site like www.imdb.com is a good way to find out what the movie is rated R for.

even though legally 17, I have yet to see anyone carded for age if they look older. I am a more open minded parent and a good scary movie with my 15 year old is not a bad thing. He is well adjusted. We are both scary movie fans
