The best time is early in the summer before it gets too hot. Spring is nice but you may have to delay if it gets rainy.
Organization is the key to a great garage sale. Make sure that you have enough tables to display everything. Also, mark the prices on everything. People hate to keep asking how much things cost.
Make good signs (BIG LETTERS so people can read them as they drive by) and put them all over the place. Put up arrows to draw people in off the main roads.
Everything sells if you get a good crowd. Clothes will sell if you display them on racks. Electronics go quickly. Price things to sell and you won't have to cart much back into the house. Books, furniture, kitchenware...
If your goal is to get rid of things, go half price after 12.

Personally, I am not going to anyone's gargage sale - I have enough of that in MY gargage. Maybe we could trade?
But seriously, any time of year, with just about any surplus stuff you have around. Combine with your neighbors for a larger sale that will attract more folks.

The best times are on Sunday afternoons when the Temperature is in the 70ties. Put up a big sign at the edge of your yard on a cardboard box in big magic marker letters. It's a good ideal to misspell so they think you are dumb..lol Almost anything that is used around the house in the area of hardware seems to sell the best and Antiques of anything and I do mean anything that is collected by collectors.

We had ours in early fall. I would just make sure it is a time of year when the weather is pleasant. We put up signs around our neighborhood with some general stuff that we would be putting out. Start early, most garage salers tend to get up early. I think pretty much everything sells. We sold old bikes, kids clothes, old VCR tapes, pretty much anything you don't want can go if you are willing to sell cheap!

I have had one around Memorial Day weekend for a few years and made good cash. Amazingly enough...junk really sells. I have had some wonderful things sitting out and the junk sold first. I've always gotten rid of furniture quickly. DVD's, VHS, Books, and kitchen good sold well also.
If you can find a way to hang some of your clothing...it's easier for people to view.

I would think that in late fall when it is starting to get cool would be a good time to sell winter items because of winter approaching. The same goes for summer items in the spring. People aren't usually wanting winter item in the heat of summer because they'd have to store them. In our area of the South, it is better to have them close to the first of the month because people have more money at that time. I'd say make sure you have everything priced and have nothing cheaper than a quarter. Quarters are easier to add than nickels and dimes. Have sacks ready to put their purchases in. Decide if you really want to get rid of your items and price them low enough where people can't resist the good deal. Be ready to negotiate IF you don't want to store your leftovers or GIVE them away to a thrift store after the sale. If something is broken, torn, stained or faded throw it away or else put it in a "free" pile for the taking. Someone might want rags for cleaning or be able to use the parts from something that is broken. It is best to hang clothes if you have something to hang them on. Clothing on a table has to be constantly straightened after people look at it. It is better to put knick-knacks on a table. Anything like jewelry that might be a little more valuable should be kept by you at the "checkout" table because believe it or not some people will even steal at a garage sale. Put up plenty of signs with large enough writing to be read from a distance. Flourescent orange or yellow catch the eye. Be sure and take your signs down after the sale. That is just good manners. Different people look for different things at garage sales so it is hard to know what things sell best. As they say, "One person's trash is another person's treasure". Men go for tools, fishing and automotive things while women are more apt to buy household items, clothing and toys. Laundry baskets or boxes are good to put toys in for children to shop in. Some people like to dig so if you run out of table and hanging space, leave a few items in boxes for people to dig around in. It is good to categorize it though, like put lingeree in one box, linens in another, books in another etc. It doesn't hurt to put a sign on the box to say 25 cents each or whatever. If you are having it in a garage, it is good to put some things out on the lawn anyway because it gives people more places to look and it isn't as crowded when they all come at once early in the morning. The die hard garage salers go very early. If you advertise that you open at 8 a.m. you can bet there will be some people come by at 7:30. Have plenty of change. Lots of people bring $20 and even ask you to break $100 sometimes. Cover things that aren't for sale or else put up a little rope barracade to keep people from going through things that you don't want in the sale. Good luck!
