Team basketball skills are very different from individual basketball skills. It's important to know individual skills, but if you are athletic and have a decent basketball body, I'm sure a coach can use you. I would talk with your school's basketball coach and find out what you can do to make the team next year. Two years is plenty of time to contribute, but you must get involved in summer basketball and in any workouts your team may have already begun. Just show a good disposition to work and listen to the coach, and he's sure to give you a shot at making the team. Good luck!!!

It's never too late. During the off season play in some pick-up games with friends and even with members of the basketball team. Keep practicing and let the basketball coach know that you would love to try out for the team the next year. Ask him if he could give you some pointers about what he is looking for in a player. As the great Jim Valvano once said "Never give up." Best of luck to you and I hope you make the team next year.

Tim Duncan, former MVP of the NBA, didn't start playing until right around your age. Now, you may not be 7' tall like him, but your goal isn't to be the MVP of the NBA, just to play on your high school team.
I actually had a situation similar to your's when I was younger and here is my advice: PLAY!!! The way to go about it is this: find one thing and do it better than anyone else. If you are athletic, maybe concentrate on your defense and/or conditioning. If you can do one thing really, really well, you will get playing time. If you are the best defender, or rebounder on your team, you will get playing time. Rebounding and defense are things that every team needs and no one wants to do. Bruce Bowen has made a career for himself on a championship NBA team, the Spurs, by pretty much just playing defense. Dennis Rodman was a part of 5 championship teams by focusing on rebounding and guarding low post players that were always bigger than him. You can find ways into the game by doing the unsexy things that are needed. Everyone wants to shoot threes and dunk. If you don't have much of a shot, working your butt off might be the quickest way to get onto the floor in a game. But, that said, keep practicing your shot until you develop one. For the quick fix, work your butt off to be on the team and play, and in the long run put in the time to develop your skill set.
If you work 4 hours a day and the other guys on your team are only working 2, eventually you will catch up, but don't give up!

yes you can start now, but you won't have much of a chance to make your high school team as a junior. baasketball is the hardest sport to fully comprehend, and to fully play the game at your best says my middle school basketball coach.but if you work throughout the summer and after school throughout next year, play in a reck league, and maybe even go to some camps you would have a chance to play as a senior or be a walk on in college.

Their is a player on Penn State who didn't find out basketball was his true sports until his sophomore season. I don't know his name, but he starts for Penn State. He starts not because of his skill, but because he has solid athleticism and a supreme understanding of the game. You may not have as much experience as other player, but you have more heart.

If you want to play then you should. It's never too late. But you sound athletic and probably very good at soccer, so I wouldn't give that up.

Go for it! It's not too late if you're willing to work hard. Let the coaches decide if you're good enough. The worst thing that could happen is that you wouldn't make the team, then you'd know to quit or work harder.
