Why are there more black people in the NBA than any other race?

Question

And shouldn't the NBA have a percentage of players from other races equal to that of the US population? Most work places have to follow these type of equal oppertunity employment practices. Should the NBA be exempt?

Some people here are saying that there are more blacks in the NBA because they are better athletes. That might be true, but you people who are saying this are missing the point of the question. You can say all you want that blacks are better athletes, but you still aren't addressing the issue of double standards in employment, which is what the asker was getting at.

Now then... I think if the NBA is allowed to hire on the basis of merit alone, then other companies also should be able to hire based on merit and not have to take race into consideration.
But I think we all know that equal employment opportunities were only ever intended to benefit blacks and other non-whites, which is why major league sports will never have a proportionate number of white players.

The percentage of white AMERICAN players has declined even since the 80's. Most white NBA ballers now come from Europe and their numbers are increasing. I think young white guys give up hope and don't want to compete at basketball as hard as young black guys. They're afraid they won't be as good so they turn to myriad other sports (baseball, football, anything involving a mountain, ice, fake snow or water) because they think they can be better at those.

Whenever questions like this come up a fog of ignorance descends so thickly that one can scarcely breathe. How ironic is it that in the same sentence in which Wassabi claims smart black people were killed off during slavery he fouls up the grammar. Things can't be "breeded" buddy, they can only be bred. Beyond the poor grammar there's poor logic. You seem to think "smart" and "fast and strong" are mutually exclusive properties. What if they were fast and/or strong and smart? Did they kill them anyway just to be on the safe side? It's a moot point really because this fascinating historical aside of yours is completely made up! Edit your answer to include one source that says slave owners killed their slaves if they were too smart. Remember, you have to prove that such purging was systematic and widespread because that is the only way it could have had an affect on the race as a whole as you claim. I'm not holding my breath on this. If you think "breeded" is a word you probably haven't mastered the art of research just yet.

Well, for one, the sport most preferred by black people is basketball. White people are everywhere basketball, hockey, curling, you name it. In my opinion, black people have great muscle growth capacity not only in their calves but their whole body. My guess is they got that from their ancestors who were enslaved and had to do hard labor which made them stronger. Also, majority of their population is tall. I know you could talk about Yao Ming and Zydrunas Ilgauskus but they are very hard to come by. How many 7 foot asian guys have you seen? Probably not too much. How about black people? Everywhere- Shaq, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Eddie Curry, Dwight Howard, etc, etc. Its not discrimination or just being biased but for some reason, all the best players in the league are black. And in our community today where we dont judge by the colour of our skin and just go for the talent, we cant blame the black people because most of them are just better than the other players in the leaugue. If you look at hockey which is dominated by white players, you can see the percentage of white players in hockey is bigger than the percentage of black players in basketball. I can go back on my frist point: black people prefer basketball and white people prefer hockey and other sports.

It is more balack people in the WNBA, AND THE NBA AND NFL. THE BEST SPORTS IN TEH WORLD: Basketball and Football, Black men and women are better athletes, and make it more entertaining, Thats just like watching a basketball game with a whole bunch of white guys, it will be boring and the guys will be slow, the same with women thats just like a whole bunch of white girls playing basketball, it will be very, very boring, than when you watch a whole bunch of black girls play it will be more interseting, seriously, the same on the mens side, why are most RB, DB,DE,CB are black. Why is there only white Punters, Kickers and Quarterbacks, Offensive lineman, TE, those areas really dont take much ability. But the balck Tight ends dominant, also like the black quarterbacks, micheal Vick, highest paid QB in NFL.

The NBA isn't for sissy's okay and the fact of the matter is that like everyone else has said BLACKS ARE BETTER ATHLETES no matter what. There are more white in everything else so when the Blacks get something its unfair well screw that, they are picked because they have skill, its in there genes, it has nothing to do with slaves or any other BS that others have to say about it. They are better because Basketball is a African- American sport, so just suck it up and watch or go watch Nascar, i guarantee you wont see any Black people there unless their changing tires k.

well the reason there are more black people in the NBA is because THEY'RE GOOD AT IT!! it's really as simple as that. i mean no one wants to watch a bunch of skinny white guys run up and down the court. and what does the equal opportunities act have to do with it? if there's a white guy who's better at b ball than a black guy, they're gonna take the white guy. if there's a black guy who's better at a certain occupation, they're gonna pick him over a white guy. it's kinda common sense

I think a lot of times black players come from tough neighborhoods with few opportunities and they see basketball as a way out so they tend to work a bit harder than most other ethnic groups to improve their game and make it to the NBA.

Why are there more white people in golf than any other race? Why are there more white people in NASCAR than any other race? Your question is as simple as you are. Basketball for it's first 5 decades had no players other than white players , so this situation should exist for 5 decades before it can be called unfair.

More black people are in the NBA because they have that extra muscle somewhere in their leg and jump a lot higher and can typically shoot better with the excpetion on JJ Redick
