so how do they decide to try or not... according to your LMP. Or do they do measurements on the baby to get it's actual age (which could be weeks earlier)??

from what i've heard, in the uk they dont try to save a premature baby unless its mum was 24 weeks or above
just in the last couple of weeks a girl here in northern ireland had a baby boy when she was only 22 weeks and they only saved him cos she lied and said she was 28 weeks pregnant when she went into labor (dont know how that worked maybe she saw a different doctor than her own and didnt bribg her hospital notes with her)

http://www.answers.com/topic/premature-birth This is a good article that may help you with issues related to premature births.Gestational age is very specific because of ultrasound. Most women do not recall their LMP. Fundal height also is used but never diagnostically when it comes to premature birth. Some health care facilities have 3-D ultrasound. Some babies are small for gestational age and some are large for gestational age. Ultrasound is very accurate. The article discusses the age of viability which is the earliest age a fetus can survive outside the uterus. There are very high prices we pay as a society for saving these babies, but technology has forced us to do this. Have a great weekend

I believe they would try measures on all babies depending on how the baby is doing. They know that the earlier the gestation the less expectancy the baby has but some infants will just not make it. In my state we had an infant born at like 24? weeks I think, but her weight was only like 13oz. when born and she survived. She is over 2 yrs now.
