Ok... so I understand that it's a safety thing... and I anticipate people reminding me so. I'm the only one that drives my Durango, and, no, I never have kids in the car. So...

How to I make my '06 act like my '98, so that I can start the engine and go straight into gear, without applying the brake?

You SHOULD be applying the brake anyway, before you put your vehicle into gear. Failing to do so, is very hard on your transmission brake bands and one way clutches. The safety factor is what makes it an NHTSA requirement that ALL automatic transmission equipped vehicles be equipped with a BSI (brake-shift-interlock) swtich. Attempting to defeat it may be cause it not to pass a safety inspection.

Seriously, not trying to be a smartass, but why. Honestly, what is the difference, and why wouldnt you apply the brake when shifting. Its safe, things just arent the way they used to be, if you want a new car this is what you have to deal with. Buy an older car or learn to drive stick.

you could drill a hole thru the bake pedal and straight thru the floorboard. take a piece of threaded rod and run it thru the pedal and floorboard. tighten the nuts snuggly. cut the excess treaded rod with a hacksaw. now you won't have to step on the brake to put it in gear and it will never roll off for that matter. now that i think ofit it won't drive off either!

hellofa safety feature!! that should keep idiots from driving!!!

depending on the general information of the vehicle, that may be a designed safety feature, and for that reason not a good thing to bypass.

not knowing the vehicle (we dont have them in au) but if its a mchanical lock out (if it is you will hear a click around the shifter area when you put your foot on the brake) you should be able to take the shifer plastic surround off, and by stepping on and off the brake pedal you should be abe to see the lockout linkage moving. Just undo/dismantle/pull out this linkage and lockout lever and bingo you wont need to put your foot on the brake!!

You don't and shouldn't. It's a safety feature that protects you by eliminating the potential for you to accidentally put it in gear without having complete control.

not going to tell you how to do it!!

an idiot who went to tech school where I did years before had a 57 Chevy with an automatic in it.. he had just had it tuned in tune ups.... any way he was working under the hood and used a remote starter awitch after bypassing the neutral safety switch...

he hit the button on the remote starter switch

and just like in movie Christine it started in drive (forward gear) leaped forward and pinned guy to wall and broke his legs...

BTW are you related to Wiley Coyote and ordering plans from that company called ACME?? Remember he never wins...

unless you want to spend thousands on a ton of new parts....you can't. that feature is there, specially in dodge/chrysler due to deaths that happened due to the brake item not being there, like your 98'. Federal law made them do it, so to remove it, you will be breaking federal law as well.

YOU WOULD NEED TO HOT WIRE THE SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID. IF YOU DISCONNECTED THE BRAKE SWITCH THE BRAKELIGHTS WOULD NOT OPERATE PROPERLY. IF YOU TAMPER WITH THIS SYSTEM AND IT CAUSES SOMEONE ELSE TO HAVE A RECK LIKE AFTER YOU SELL IT YOU WILL GO TO PRISON.
