So about a week ago I realyzed that one of my snails was missing. I guess he got away through the top of the tank although now its fixed btw so dont fuss at me.

Today, I moved my shelf to a different spot and there he was.

I put him in the tank...idk y. And OMG! Hes alive???!

so they can live out of water to? I thought hed be dead but wow. Im so glad hes not.
sorry Im just amazed lol.

Some species of snail can "hibernate" for a couple of years. This is mainly in times of drought or short food supply. In your home aquarium if your snail escapes, he can travel safely for only so far before he starts to dry out. At this point they will ususually seal their shell (to retain moisture) and become dormant.

When you put him back into the water, he came out of his dormancy.

They can survive for quite some time out of water by closing off the bottom of their shells. I have no clue what the records might be, but a week is a nice long time for one to make it. Very cool.

weird... my guess is that he just sucked himself up and stayed in his shell with some stored water from the tank, but he probably would have died eventually.
