when they know deep down it tastes absolutely rank. is it a means of seeing how "hard" you are or something.

Isn't it a bit narrow to think everybody dislikes something just because you dislike it? Obviously some people like alcohol or they wouldn't bother with it.

Because many actually like the taste and effects of alcohol, therefore they drink it. I feel the same way about coffee but understand that all things aren't for all people so I leave it at that.

Some people like the taste of alcohol. There are so many different alcoholic drinks available that I find it hard to believe that you can't find something you like. If you don't like it, don't drink it.

It's about fitting in. Alcohol is a social lubricant and at many social functions, especially as you age.
Booze also is an acquired taste, so you have to have it a few times before you start to like it.

They force themselves to because it makes them look cool to their peers. They don't want to be different or they would be ostracized.
