couldnt they come up with a different way to do it? or is that the most accurate spot?

lol my friend and i were having an arguement about this... i wanted to get other peoples opinions thanks

You take a pet's temperature rectally because they can't hold the thermometer under their tongue. A rectal temp is the most accurate. I worked at a vet clinic that used an ear thermometer, but it was Very inaccurate. If the temperature was high or low, which it often was, then we had to take a rectal temp anyways. I find that taking an animals temp is the WORST part of the vet visit, they hate it.

Well, can you imagine trying to put a thermometer in a dog/cats (etc) mouth and expecting them to hold it there under their tongue until you can read it. Some vets may have the "ear" thermometer available..but other than that the "other end" is the easiest etc.

Ear thermometers are not accurate because the dogs ear canal is shaped like an L, not a straight canal like a humans.

Because taking the temp from the rectum is the most accurate.

this is the most accurate area.
they will not sit there with their mouth closed.
ear thermometers are not accurate.

Can you get your dog to hold the thermometer under its toung?

the vets like doing that! an it is the only place!
