Well, it's probably not a good idea to take the midnight train going anywhere. The girl might find a nice guy on the train, but it's better to find someone through more natural channels, like at work, through friends, etc. There are also guys that specialize in finding women that look lonely. They sometimes hang out at major bus depots, the places where kids from small towns enter the big city for the first time.
The guy's situation is a bit different, because he's not lonely. It's probably good for him to get out of the city and his normal routines. He can discover a new part of town, or get out into the suburbs or even further.

About the boyfriend far away it sounds like one of you has to move or both of you halfway. But as far as the small town, build up the town library if there is one and start a book group or join a club or start one. Its easier than you might think. Start in a church looking for interested people. Small town people just ache to go anywhere.
