Well - what fruits and veggies do you like to eat. I have a vegetable garden every year for the last 40 years and it took me a long time to learn not to grow the easy veggies - just grow the ones I like. Plant bush beans - the early beans are good in salads and later you can dry them and use them in soups. We like tomatoes so I usually put in 24 to 30 plants - some for slicing and some for canning and the small ones for salads. Root types (like carrots and radishes) can be planted and left in the ground even over winter. Lettuce is a lot of work and come in all at once so you don't have time to eat it all and it doesn't keep well so I don't plant it. Spinach is good because you can either can it or freeze it. Cucumbers can be canned and the small ones pickled (you call them gherkins I think) I sometimes plant cauliflower, brussel sprouts and freeze them.
Good Luck !

isnt it getting ready for fall or winter down under? In the midwest usa I stick to basics, less work more reward! tomatoes first, then greens, onions, beans, maybe some melons if there is room left in the garden?whenever I try to get "fancy" or grow something new it gets screwed up!!
