I absolutely swear by microsoft money. It is the best program around, helps with everything from a family budget, to balancing the checkbook, as well as allowing you to integrate your stock portfolio. In one word: magnificent.

I like using Quicken. You can use it track any level of your home finances. The checkbook register portion is really easy, as are the other functions.

Quicken or Money. Each year reviews put one slightly better than the other. Both are good choices. I use Quicken & love it. Everything I read about money tells me its also great.
