My friend's daughter just had a baby. She's 17 years old. My friend said that she had no idea that her daughter was pregnant until she went into labor. Her daughter said the same thing!!! She had no idea she was pregnant until she went to the hospital in extreme pain and they said she was 4-5 cm dilated. Do you all think this is possible? I do believe that my friend did not know about the pregnancy, but I don't believe the daughter didnt know she was pregnant.

Maybe if the girl was 12 or 13 I might believe it. But how can you go the whole 9 months at 17 years old and not know youre pregnant? Or has that happened to anyone??

Any thoughts??

And as for my friend what does that say for her as a mother, that she did not know her daughter was pregnant?? Or is it all on the girl???

My husbands aunt went 8 months before she realized she was pregnant, but she is a large woman.. I can`t really see how people could go 9 months without knowing...(even more so with small women) I mean I`m pregnant with my 3rd and I`m of average size. I can`t see how they could not feel the baby moving around (especially in the later months) I mean yeah okay your vomiting and tired, you could play that off as the flu or something but the baby moving?? Kicking?? I don`t know....As far as the mother not knowing....Well I agree with the person that said we need to be more involved with are kids lives other than asking how was your day...

Actually, a while ago, where I am anyway, there was the case of a 400 pound woman in the news, (and she was close to 40) had a baby she didn't know about until the day she gave birth. She felt pains, and went to the hospital, and the doctors informed her that she was in labor. So, I guess, people who are heavy can't always tell if they're pregnant, or sometimes the telltales signs of pregnancy may just seem normal if you have other conditions that have similiar symptonms? I'm not sure, but was your friend's daughter obese? I also have a hard time believing that though :)

The same thing happened to my aunt. She and the rest of the family had no idea she was pregnant until the baby was coming.
Since I know this kind of thing is possible, I wouldn't put too much blame on the daughter. She may very well be as dumbfounded and surprised as everyone else is. And that's really going to be something to deal with...only 17 and she didn't even get time to prepare.
As for the mom, I would say that she should have been more observant about her daughter's situation. She's old enough and has been around the block. Although signs of pregnancy were not obvious, she should have atleast noticed a weight gain in her daughter and addressed it with her. They might have figured it out sooner.
Anyways, best of luck to them.

There was a case several years ago of a nurse, who already had children, being pregnant and not knowing it. She only found out when she gave birth.

Additionally, my friend works at a hospital and he said this happened at least once while he was on call, with an overweight woman. She was not a teenager.

Some women continue to get their periods during pregnancy, and so don't know they are pregnant. Additionally, a 17-year old may not have known any of the other typical signs of pregnancy. She may have attributed the symptoms to something else.

So yes, I think it's possible that she didn't know.

I have a friend who is overweight and was prego. She did not know until she went in to labor either. She says she had her period the whole time and that she took hpt b/c she had a suspicion, but all were (-). On the other hand I find it hard to believe that a women would not know in other situations where there is no period or if mom is starting to show.

It is thought that with all the effects that occur in a woman's pregenancy a woman would know that she is pregenant from hints like: fatigue, vomiting, cramps, ending of menstruating cycle for 9 months, hunger, weight gain ect. With such dramatic changes that happen in the 9 month course of pregenancy; unless your friend is incredibly naive she would be aware that something was happening. I honestly think that because she is at the somewhat young age of seventeen and probably in not married to her partner; she probably felt that by hiding her pregenancy and lying to her mother about not knowing that she was pregenant would make her seem more innocent and perhaps her mother would be more willing to forgive her and help her with her child. I can't judge what she is thinking because I don't know your friend but if I were in her curcumstance I would be anxious to tell my mother what was going on as well.

When I was in high school there was a girl who did the same thing Nobody knew. I think she had to of known, as for the mom I think it means that they live busy lives and trust that their daughter would tell them anything important. But as parents it should reminds us we need to talk to our kids and not just "how was your day?"I think this Friend of yours may need some support, I'm sure she's feeling like an idiot for not knowing.

I've heard of this happening with either extremely overweight women, or extremely small infants and overweight women.

Otherwise I don't think it is possible to go 9months without knowing.
