There are three main groups of fish so I am assuming you are talking about the bony fish. Most of the following characteristics can go for the other two groups as well.
Skeleton made of bone or cartilage
Lateral line
Two chambered heart
Operculum covering the gills. (sharks and lampreys don't have them)
Swim bladder (only in bony fish)
Ectothermic
Paired fins made of rays and spines,or lobed fins lacking the rays and spines.
Various types of scales (Placoid, ctenoid, ganoid, or cycloid).
Marine and fresh water species.
Gills used for respiration
External fertilization. Spawning. Oviparous.
No external ears
No eye lids.

Woah. Here are five that I can think of:

1) They have gills.
2) They have paired fins.
3) They utilize bulk flow to transport oxygen efficiently.
4) They are aquatic animals.
5) They are chordates.

That's the best I can think of; sorry if it doesn't help too much.
