Encourage them to live in cities, closer to their workplaces, rather than in suburbs with a 40-minute commute time. I drive 5 minutes to work every day, put MAYBE 100 miles on my car a week.

Sure, I will walk the 5 miles to work when it's
-30/-40 here for 2 months. Cities sure but that does not work for every area in the world.

Have transportation authorities look at what the British did in the UK.They have a very efficient mass transit system,that you can catch a bus or train within a short walk from any home.

Not sure but for inspiration on how to answer that, visit some cities in Europe...

For starters, two things are necessary:

1. Excellent public transportation
2. A city center from which most anything you need could be found within walking distance

you really can't unless you can control the weather.
too cold, too hot, rain, and snow are all reasons why people drive their cars.
But you can PROMOTE CARPOOLING,,1 car driving to work with 4 people inside sounds much better than 4 cars driving to the same place...it's safer for the enviroment.....

Give tax breaks to corporations that provide telecommuting for at least 30% of their employees, 100% of the time.

Sometimes nothin' beats workin' from home, a nice cold beer on the desk on one side, a plate of nachos on the other....very productive!

keep raising gas prices!! offering incentives to carpool doesn't work. public transportation sucks. another way might be if insurance would offer some rebates for ones who curtail their driving, but that would open an ugly can of worms

haha ya i agree with the tire slashing...i had this discussion in science class we should just take away cars altogether and people can take the buses around cities
