I agree that Americans are so caught up in entertainment and celebrities and their own comfort they don't know what is really going on in the world and perhaps they do know more about their favorite celebrity then their grandparent, or even a relative.
Americans are very selfish, and I am an American so I can say that. I think we, just, try to be the best and want the best and, in some cases, need the best. We always get what we want. In my eyes, American is spoiled.
Thanks for taking your time and reading my opinion.
God bless you and the U.S.A.!!!!!

I disagree there are some that relish the entertainment and celebrity talk but I believe majority of Americans are concerned with what is going on around them. As far as being selfish I would put 1 or 2 other countries at the top of that list.

In my opinion, and many others, America is awesome! One of the best countries to live in. Of course not everyone can be happy about everything, such as about the president, but hey, you can't "please all the people, all the time." And war, this goes on pretty much everywhere; you can't avoid it. Therefore, I'm very proud to say that I'm American. Even with all of this going on, we still have our rights and we are able to do what we want. This includes obsessing over the lives of celebrities :P.
Obsessing over celebrities is not a hobby I partake in, fortunately. When I see all of those magazines in store checkout lines, I just roll my eyes and continue on with my own life. A co-worker of my dads used to buy nearly every one of those magazines, such as Star, and send them to my mom and I when she was done. It was fun to read some of the articles and make fun of the celebrities, but mainly my mom and I just liked the crosswords ;). So yeah, there are people who know more about celebrities than their own grandparents. It's sad, but hey, whatever makes them happy in their free time.
I think a lot of people are ignorant about what is going on in the world, and many also take for granted the freedoms they have. Many are too busy crabbing about how unfair it is that celebrities make so much more money than themselves. They don't think of how fortunate they really are compared to poorer countries.
My boyfriend is latin, so I hear a lot from his mom on how selfish America really is. I never realized it before. She can't believe that so many kids, adults, drop out of school or choose not to work when they have the ability to. They take these things for granted; anyone can attend public schools without cost. So in a way, yeah, they are selfish. And, too many people consider money and power the way to the great life. A big house or a lambourgini (however that's spelled) means more to status that a loving family.
This isn't everyone though. I also want to add that I can't stand the fact celebrities make more money than doctors. That's insane and it pee's me off :P

Every nationality is selfish in terms of making themselves comfortable. It doesn't make a bit of difference if I'm American, Japanese, Australian, African, Korean, Canadian or some unknown tribe that creeps through the wilderness at nights scooping up field mice and bopping them on the head.
If someone, be it American or not decides to let themselves become engulfed by the latest celebrity news, then that's on them and hasn't a damn thing to do with where they are from.
No one forces anyone to look at the stuff, so if the material is used, that's on the individual at hand, not an entire country.

Yes, I would agree. However, I do educate myself about what is going on around the world and find it all very depressing.
Sometimes I want to devote my life to trying to change the world, but other times I look at history and see humans as pretty hopeless. For all the good people doing good works, the horror and brutality continue to make the reality of this world a very dark one.
I think we will have devoured the earth's resources before we have figured out how to be the superior species we claim to be.

I think alot of those who are caught up in the entertainment and celebrity drama is so that they can feel us 'normal' people are not the only ones with issues. Some people may have a hard time thinking or believing that the so called glamor life of the stars could be anything less than perfect. So when we hear about all of the drama going on we have a tendency to wallow in it.

I am married to a lady in Costa Rica. I took my children to visit her just so they could see how people with nothing learn to live. It is true that Americans have no idea what it is to live with nothing. When a new coffee pot makes a woman happy enough to cry,,,, when a family is so happy that their child got an ice cream that they offer to do work for you in place of your kindness. It is a shame too, because you can talk about it till you are blue in the face and no-one will understand it until they live it. You are right,,, America, Home of the free to be ignorant and land of the brave to say they can be.

I see this trait in the younger generation. Theres an obsession with celebrities & the media. How many people under 23 vote for American Idol & not in national elections? Too many. Scary. Sitting around and "waiting for the world to change" like the pop song says.
