Many students have trouble expanding their minds - so many works of Literature will seem boring to them. I read Brave New World, Nineteen Eighty-Four, and The Lord of the Flies in high school, and for me it did exactly that - it expanded my mind. Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, and William Golding each wrote works of literature that dealt with the way humans govern humans. For a high school student, being introduced to the concepts of dystopia, totalitarianism, and the likes were a step up from the books I had read before. I was not bored, since I did not (and do not) have the attention span of a rabbit.

Because it's a classic, and also a classic representative of an important genre - dystopia.

It also gets students thinking - about society, free will, the arbitrariness of social norms, and the relative values of freedom and security. Due to the very different society presented in it (and contrasted with the society of the reservations), students start realizing that social norms are not fixed, but can vary greatly between societies, and can also change over time.

It is therefore a great base for learning to discuss different viewpoints and express them clearly, rationally, and convincingly.
