Any comments on this engine? Peformance, Durability?
I had heard that the Trans Am was originally designed for it, but it seemed to have faded pretty fast from Pontiac offerings.
Was it ever put in anything light enough for it to be a contender?

It was in the Sprint (early stripped down lemans - similar to GTO) and the firebird. They came in a 4 barrel 215 hp although most were 165 with a 1 barrel. Firebirds handled better with them than the 8s due to the reduction in weight. You could get a 3 or 4 speed manual or a 2 or 3 speed automatic with them.

They were released in 1967 (year of the sprint) and had a 230 cu in displacement. Enlarged to 250 for 1968. Hard to get parts for now - the valvetrrain and head is unique to this engine and its 3 year run. The bottom end was based off of the chev 6.

Certain engines have a built-in safety margin , and straight 6 cylinders have that - due to the design, there's no unnecessary vibrations that need to be compensated for, unlike V-6 and 4 cylinder designs. If you meant between a V-6 and 4 cylinder, neither will last extremely long, whereas several straight 6's have been known to go 250,000 miles or longer in some old Chevies. All depends on make, model, and maintenance. As to bigger vs. smaller engine, yes, a bigger one won't have as much stress that a small one has in producing power, so unless the bigger 4-cylinder was over-burdened in a MUCH bigger vehicle, it should be a better choice than a smaller one. Again, the 3 M's - Make, Model, and Maintenance, make all the difference in what makes them last. Make and Model being more quality and design related than anything. - The Gremlin Guy -

The answer above mine is correct, but in the 80s someone started making the camshafts again (that was this engine's weak point). I'm not sure, but I think they are still available somewhere.

Overall a good engine that was ahead of its time.
