They have to be sanded and refinished, polyurethaned etc. I just had it done and it looks great. Unless you have LOTS of energy call someone to do it.

Ditto that last answer - Murphy's oil soap. Go easy on the water, though. You don't want to flood the floor, and cause the wood to swell and warp.

have the floors stripped, if you don't have the money, then you have alot of work, try a solution of 1/3 part vinegar, 1/3 part turpentine, 1/3 part linseed oil. and super fine gauge steel pads, and rub the solution on every inch of floor. hire a floor strpper.
