No, that would just disable the NAT firewall and make it so every piece of equipment on your network would have to get a WAN IP address from your DSL provider. You usually only get 1WAN IP address from your DSL provider and have to pay for additional WAP ip addresses.

Please explain what is going on that you think that you could make things "work better".

Changing the settings of the dsl modem will very easily disconnect you completely. As a tech support for internet companies, changing the dsl modem settings disables the modem completely from the internet. If you need a public ip address then contact the internet provider.
