A good place to start is with a geologic map. Here is a simplified geologic map of North America : http://nationalatlas.gov/articles/geology/a_timeterrian.html
It has some links that will give you rock ages, more detail regarding general rock types (sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic) etc.
