St. Patrick was actually (as far as anyone knows) born in Britain around 389 AD. His father was a christian official of the Roman Empire. Patrick was kidnapped at 16 and taken to Ireland to be a shepard. He suffered many hardships and after having a vision, eventually made his way back to Britain. Later, in another vision , he was told to return to Ireland as a missionary. He studied for the priesthood in France and became a bishop. He returned to Ireland with a group of missionaries where he spent about 30 years converting pagans to Catholicism, building churches and baptizing thousands. Eventually he resigned as bishop of Armagh and moved north to Saul where he died in 461 AD. It is believed that he taught the holy trinity using the three leaf clover and drove all the snakes out of Ireland as an example of Gods power. The shamrock became the symbol of Ireland. St. Patrick's feast day is March 17th.

Saint Patrick was the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland who is credited with bringing christianity to Ireland. The story holds that he converted the warrior chiefs and princes, baptizing them and thousands of their subjects in the "Holy Wells" that still bear this name.
