To reorganise data on a hard disk so that every part of a file is together rather then split across multiple sections of the disc. This can speed up access (since the computer can find the beginning of the file and read to the end rather than find the beginning, read to the end, find the start of the next fragment, read to the end, repeat, etc)

Defragmenting your system reorganizes your files which allows your system to run faster. When you initially save files to your system they are saved in random order with parts of them all over your hard drive wherever it can find space. The process moves the file parts together which saves your computer time when it is later trying to open and recall these files. In order to defragment your hard drive click on Start>Programs>Accessories>Systems Tools > Defragmenter

To defragment is to compress information in your computer and make your computer run faster. You should defragment your computer every so often to keep it running and working properly. I defragment once a month.

When the PC stores files on your hard drive it selects a space big enough for the initial file. If you then extend that file it puts the extension in another part of the hard drive. As this goes on, files become "fragmented" all over your hard drive. The "defragmenter" is a program to re-arrange the files on your hard drive so that components are together again and require less time to access.

Files and applications on your computer's hard disk drive are not always stored together as one unit, but are often divided into smaller units and scattered around the hard disk. This is caused by normal use.If you use your computer a lot, it's a good idea to run Disk Defragmenter on a regular basis. It's also a good idea to run Disk Defragmenter after you install a lot of applications to enable them to run at top speed
