Basically all I want to know is what it means when a player in the MLB gets sent down, and the team says that player has been "optioned" to triple-A.

When a player is optioned that means that they are part of the 40-man roster; they can be optioned (sent down) for the first three years that they are on the 40-man roster. They can be sent down multiple times each season but only in the first three seasons of their career. The options are often to AAA, but they can be as far down as single A leagues.
Most players sign a minor league contract first.. This means that they are not on the major league team's 40-man roster.
Quite often #1 draft picks are signed to major league contracts; that means they have to make the majors full time in three years or they can become free agents. Examples are Mark Prior and Justin Verlander.
When they sign minor league contracts they have 6 years to make the major league team or they can choose to become a free agent. There is also a minor league draft; that is how the Tigers obtained Chris Shelton from the Pittsburgh Pirates 3 years ago.

If a player does not make the major league team they are optioned because it was on theor contract when they signed it.So they are sent down because of an option.

They've been sent down to Triple-A to play for the minor legue team of the organization until he's ready to come back up to play in the Major Leagues.

It means a team's management has chosen not to give him a spot on the major league team's roster so they sent him down (which was an option of theirs). Its just a term

optioned means he was sent to the minors it was the clubs option to send him there.
