I'm 59 and I have had plenty of them....it is not a 'heat' from the outside in...like the temperature of the weather...
It is a chemical heat that comes from inside and so intense that you think you can't stand it....but, it too shall pass. I was so hotflashy one Thanksgiving that I felt like I had to open a kitchen window....phew....

Yes, and it was uncomfortable. When I was at work, I'd get very flushed and then sweat everywhere. In the middle of the night, They would wake me up, all sweaty, then later very cold.

oh my god...you have no idea!
everything is fine and all of a sudden - bam! its instant internal heat - your head sweats, your mouth goes dry, sweat all of a sudden trickles down your back, your clothes get damp and sticky and its horrid.... it only lasts 10-15 minutes but by gosh when its over you need a long cool shower!
and be ready to change your bedding daily!
