About 7 years ago i got my first guitar for Christmas because I wanted to learn how to play. It's one of those crappy First Act acoustics from wal*mart. I have to say its albsolutely terrible and impossible to tune. Well, im actually tryin to learn how to play it so i can join my schools jazz band as an electric guitar player, and im doin really well at learnin it. The problem is that i know absolutely nothing about guitars and i have no idea what kind i should get. So anyone have any suggestions for a good electric guitar for jazz?

For a high school jazz band, they will probably let you in with almost anything if you are the best. It would be nice to have a semi-hollow body Gibson, but they are very pricey and not as versatile. When I played in the HS jazz band, I had a Yamaha Pacifica and then later a Fender Strat. Both were fine for the jazz band. I would say any Strat you can afford would be good. If it is going to be your only electric, you want something versatile that you can play when the jazz band is over. Also, be sure you know how to read music and keep a good beat, since the jazz guitar is not really the focus of the band. Good luck!

If you must have an electric for jazz, use a semi-hollow body, in the form of a Gibson 335 (doesn't have to be Gibson, just look like one if you want to be economical), also the Gibson Les Paul shape is good because they have good sustain(doesn't have to be Gibson, just look like one) Ibanez makes several hollowbodies that are good, and not as expensive as Gibson, all of these are good for jazz, and blues!! And Epiphone makes several hollowbodies that are affordable also!!

If you're in school, I'm going to assume you have a budget. If you need a semi hollow guitar for cheap, look at Ibanez Artcore series or Epiphone semi hollows. Both made in Korea, and are pretty decent for beginner type jazz boxes.

Fender Telecasters are jazzy sounding to me. You may want to ask your band teacher his opinion on the matter. I'm sure he could make suggestions about what he thinks sounds best with the group. In the mean time.... maybe have a peek here... http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitar/navigation/electric-guitars?N=100001+304275&page=1
