Yes they can. Like others have said the most common disease is wet-tail. It's severe diarrhea. There is a cure called dri-tail and some other meds work too like trimethp(kinda like animal penicillin). It also helps to put them on a dry oatmeal diet until they're better(then slowly give them their seed diet back, so you don't over whelm their system and they get sick again).
Also with wet tail, the cage needs to be cleaned out with bleach and let it sit out in the sun to dry before putting an animal back in the same cage because is it contagious.
Other common problems are cancer, tumors, and respiratory infections.
To keep them from getting respiratory infections, they need to right type of bedding, one of the best is Aspen, worst, cedar and carefresh.
Most of the time, if the problem isn't caught almost immediately the hamster will die, other times, they can be treated and will live.
With cancer, there is really no treatment, no hope.
With tumors, sometimes, they can be removed and the hamster will be fine.
...hope this helps...

Yes, hamsters get sick more often if you house more than one together or if they are not properly cared for. For example you let ammonia build up or everything get wet. The most common disease is wet tail, and the cure is called dri-tail. It's first symptom is to visibly see a wet tail, and then they will lye around and lose a lot of weight really fast. There are a lot of other diseases possible but they are more uncommon. Wet tail is curable and sometimes the hamster will live...If you catch the first symptom on time.

Yes they get sick and they should be seen by a vet. I once paid £50 for my daughters' hamster to be anesthetized to have a hole, made by a seed in it's cheek, repaired. The hamster only cost £7.50 to begin with but I couldn't allow it to suffer.
