Try some of these sights. They helped me understand someone when I was in my darkest despair. Hope they help you out and good luck.

Just to be the devil's advocate that I love to be...

Remember, nothing in psychology is proven, it's just that the other explanation is probably not correct.

I'm guessing your question is for an undergraduate paper. There are different schools of psychology that explain issues in different ways. For example, a behavioral psychologist would say that abuse is a learned behavior that the perpetrator has observed from a family member, etc. A cognitive psychologist would say that the perp has an error in thinking, for example, the perp thinks he can gain control over a situation by acting aggressive.

What about abusive women? Do you think only men are abusers? Do you think men are generally more abusive than women?

When a man gets in trouble for hitting a woman, for example, he's considered to be the bad guy. And he is. It is certainly bad to hit people. But quite often that act of violence is preceded by months and years of emotional violence by the woman against the man. I'm a victim of this so I know something about it. I estimate that more than half of the things my wife says to me are hostile and insulting. Talk about psychological abuse, it's been going on for years. She thinks I'm to blame for everything she's unhappy about yet she accepts no responsibility for any aspect of the partnership. And my only recourse is to divorce her and the divorce settlement would makes us both homeless.
