I think one reason is time & space. The pitch is big enough to allow for a lot of time to be elasped (time passed) before a goal is scored. Which is also another reason...Goals aren't scored as much as baskets, touchdowns, homeruns, etc. Americans like sports that are quick and full of action...all the time. Don't get me wrong, soccer is full of action as well, but it mostly occurs on an attack. When a team is just passing a ball around, that is when some people get bored.

Actually, Some Americans do really enjoy football [[soccer]]. I have no idea why we must call it soccer when it makes much more sense to call it football but most of the people I know LOVE IT. Also, I actually play on a team that is the "International FOOTBALL club" and many teams in my area are very serious, and there are many programs that are very serious about soccer. The only reason it isn't popular to watch on TV is because of money from the US.... less commercials. BUT for your information, when playing is the question, there are Americans very serious about soccer, just not watching it on television.

Some of us do, but American football (a descendant of Gaelic Football) is ingrained into our traditional life. It's a cultural difference. Soccer is seen as boring because although there's running around, there isn't any contact or high scoring. Those exist in American Football, and that's what we're used to. Watch Aussie Rules Football or Gaelic Football, and you'll see the source of our game and the reason it's so well liked. All of those cultures have Celtic influences. That should be obvious.
It's almost a silly question, really. Different cultures like different things for different reasons.

Soccer here in the states is becoming more and more popular. When I was in high school (graduated in 1978) we didn't have a soccer team at school. Now high school teams are everywhere. There are a lot of league teams not associated with school too (my daughter plays on one), Soccer will never replace American football here just like no sport will unseat baseball in Japan.

I like soccer and so do many other Americans. I keep up with the EPL, Serie A, La Liga and Mexican Soccer because it's shown on TV here.. but it is nothing compared to American Football. American football has the best athletes in the world.. I mean you have 325 lb guys running 4.4 40s and just absolute beasts.
If our best athletes decided to play soccer, we would absolutely dominate the world... We would have six foot plus guys out there who ran 4.2-4.4.3 40s and no one would be able to keep up...Seriously, the rest of the world has nothing on the athleticism of America

My Grandmother could play in the EPL. And I guarantee you that even our worst athletes are better than Christiano Ronaldo in the 100m dash. Soccer is a SKILL SPORT. We enjoy ATHLETIC SPORTS. You don't time 40's in soccer, we do in football and it is for a reason. I look at guys on a soccer field and wonder... would they break if I touched them. The refreshing thing is that most soccer players look like your thin average joe, so that probably makes you foreigners feel good, since you don't have to be too athletic.
No one here watches baseball you foreign idiots. More people watched the world cup than watched the world series this year (most were foreign anyway, but give me a break). Our sport is Football. We love it, it is violent (the only violent thing about soccer is the fans) and it gets us pumped because every game MEANS SOMETHING. No nil-nil draws. And if you think our football is easy... Call me when you make the NFL, Idiots.

Soccer is popular in the U.S., it just isn't as popular as football. I love both. I support the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL, DC United of MLS, ManU, and AC Milan worldwide. I hope some day we will have a team in Philadelphia, and that MLS grows into a much respected Premier League.
I admit the name game is a bit contentious, but nothing will stop me from liking both of the greatest games in the world.

I don't know about our weird neighbours to the south, but us Canadians enjoy the sport of soccer very much. I don't even understand how the Americans' soccer team has qualified for the World Cup every year since the beginning (I think that's right).

well, here is my thot and i am probably 100% right. first of all, us ppl hav other sports that they claim arent boring and "soccer" is boring. when "soccer" is on tv in the US less ppl watch it becuz its boring, less viewers means less $$$. if u put on a baseball, american football, or basketball game, more people will view which means more $$$. college staff recruit high school players who suck at eduactation but rule the courts, that way people will recognize this skilled player and tune in...colleges get more $$$. second of all, there is only one break in football. HALFTIME, when u are a viewer at home, you are going to watch COMMERCIALs, which in other words means $$$ to the broadcasters. heres the thing tho, basketball, baseball, and american fottball hav plenty of breaks and timeouts and what not for the sport. each break means COMMERCIALS which means $$$. so USA wants more exciting sports that they enjoy and can be viewed easily. wen they turn on ther sports channel, a basketball/baseball/american football game shud be usually on. ther they can view these sports. where football is less accessable and tv watchers in the US cannot view the AMAZING sport and the skill they go very stereotypical and say stupid stuff about the worldwide sport. all i here my bloody american friends talk about wen it comes to "soccer" it comes to the subject of zidanes headbutt or beckhams transfer or "hair-dos" or his wife!!! i want real conversations about manchester uniteds game today, or how chelsea beat sheffield 3-0 or whether or not cristiano ronaldo is going to real madrid. i dont care about some stupid headbutt...but thats the only thing americans see on tv wen it comes to "soccer"

I love both football and american football. most of american don't like football because, american don't know about it. that's all. but as an american who knows about both sports, I know to watch football is a lot more exciting than to watch american football. American don't know how great sport football is. american football is almost boring comparing with football.
