I bought concrete drill bits in the past to fasten the a threshold to a concrete slab. The drill bit went in about 1/4 in and went dull. The drill bits are expensive. I used a cordless and corded drill. But I got the same results. Now I want to work on a bigger project on my concrete deck. What tools an materials can I use to drill holes to anchor some 6x6 pressure treated uprights to the concrete slab? I want to build a pergola but don't want my drill bit budget to be the same as the lumber and hardware budgets.

You don't have the power you need. I guess you realize that now. You will need a heavier drill like a hammer drill .There is no easy way.

Your best bet is to rent a hammer drill. Hilti make a very good one and most rental centers carry them. Before you rent it go to a hardware store and get some either 1/4,3/8" or 1/2" concrete anchors. These can be Drop in or the ones with a threaded stud already attatched to it. Drill your holes and then vacuum them out. Drop in your anchor and then tighten nut down to your bracket for your deck posts. If the bolt or stud sticks up some just drill a 3/4" hole in the bottom of your post so it sets all the way down. Good luck with your project.

When we put a window in our basement and had to drill thru the concrete foundation, we went to a tool rental store and rented a big hammer drill. (I think that was what it was called~you would have to ask at your rental place.) It has drilling action + up and down motion. The bits came with the rental, and it was fairly cheap. I think it would be well worth the $$ for a large project like you are wanting to tackle:) You would probably end up saving money in the long run with the rental cost vs all of the drill bits you would have to buy:) If you have everything you want to drill marked where you need it, you could rent if for just a couple hours.
Good Luck!!

You need a hammer drill. A normal drill wont do it. They can be rented at an equipment rental supply.
