At 18 when I went to university. I worked for six months to pay for the first year, then got a student loan and supplemented that with work throughout the academic year at university and summer and holiday jobs.

When I moved outta my parents house into an apartment with friends. I was almost 20 years old. Since then, I've worked my butt off and pay for everything myself. That's not to say I haven't had to ask for some help here and there from my parents (unexpected car bills etc). But they have had every dime repaid to them that I have ever borrowed. I was well prepared though because my parents taught me growing up all about hard work and earning things. I got a job at 16, my brother and I bought our first car together. My parents still helped us out as teenagers with the needed things, but our part time jobs went to car insurance, gas and any extras for clothes etc that we wanted. It's not the easiest thing in the world, but it's nice to know you can take care of yourself and not have to depend on anyone else!

I'm 24 for with a carrer as a chef, my wife is 28 with a bachelor in criminal justice, and going to law school. I have two kids......I am nowear near financialy independent.

i was 21-and started my first 'adult' job and my mom kicked me out so i would become independent-best thing that ever happened to me ♥

When I got a job at 19.... but, then I quit it 4 weeks later cuz my boss was a jerk off.
